Try to plan ahead and book, and be kind. On a beautiful spring evening, the Langstrath Inn turned out to be a divine, unexpected find. Sophie was patient as she trained staff, handled booked tables and walk-ins, and served everyone with exceptional respect. It was great to meet the chef Connor. Lamb shanks, grilled salmon and a double serving of crumble with custard and ice cream rounded off the evening. All the best to Paul and the new staff.

The refurb feels modern while keeping some traditional touches, and the welcome was friendly. The food was good quality but quite expensive. I had the beer-battered whiting and chips for £23. The batter was crisp and the fish tasted fresh, though the chips were rather miserly for the price, and the ramekins of mushy peas and tartare sauce were tiny. There was a mix-up with the drinks charge and we ended up paying twice for the same drink. Once we noticed, the staff were quick and good about correcting the mistake.

We had a Sunday roast and it was lovely, so I’d come back. The only downside was that the cauliflower was a little hard and could have cooked longer, but that didn’t put us off. The owners are nice, and there’s a small private parking area.

We saw another couple decide against ordering after watching the older man, who I assume owns the place, being rude and hostile to us. He lost our custom, and theirs too. It’s one of the few pubs along that stretch of the Cumbria Way, so perhaps he thinks people will come regardless and customer service doesn’t matter.

The welcome from the staff was so warm, and they were happy to help with anything. The roast lamb was perfect, too. This little hidden gem served the most amazing roast dinner. I wish we had somewhere like it closer to home. Six stars if I could. Thanks for such a lovely experience!
