The old building is interesting and the location is handy for cafes, restaurants and shops when you need to refuel on the coast to coast. But the rooms were very small, with hardly any room for bags. The bunk beds felt rickety, and I wasn't sure they'd hold a bigger adult. Fine for kids, not so much for grown-ups. The bedding had seen better days, too, so for the price it wasn't great.

We came back to the hostel and, like our earlier visits, had a great stay. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in town, especially the tap room next door. It's a great spot for walkers and cyclists. Check-in was easy, and Denise came by to make sure everything was all right. One person in our group hurt himself on a walk and decided to head home, so Denise kindly drove him to the station for his train. Another great stay, and I'm sure we'll be back.

Handy stopover in Kirby Stephen, on the edge of the Lakes. There's plenty of space to hang out, cook and eat, and my motorbike was safe. Those who know, know. Recommended for lads and lassies. The 7-11 is across the road, with a chippy, Indian, Italian and pubs just a short walk away.

Stayed privately for one night at this clean, tidy hostel. I was travelling solo on a motorbike, and Denise was friendly and accommodating. Good price, and a handy spot for shops, cafes and pubs. I'd recommend it.

I booked at the last minute while doing the C2C, and the communication was brilliant. Denise was so helpful when I asked for a room to myself, and breakfast was perfect. The clean, tidy room had a very comfortable bed, and the bathroom was clean too. The drying room was a real bonus for a hike or cycle trip. The location is lovely, and Kirby has everything you'd need. It would make a good base as well as a stopover.
