Altnacealgach Motel

We felt at home straight away, and the hosts were friendly, helpful and easy to like. At our request, we even had a dram and a little whisky lesson. The room was spotless and had everything for a longer stay, which I wish we’d planned. Wifi only worked at the bar and phone reception was poor, though being off-grid for the night was actually nice. It’s also well placed for the NC500.

Craig & Sue were wonderful hosts, happy to share their knowledge of the area and help us make the most of our time there. After a day in the hills, the Inn next door was handy for home cooked food and a few drinks. Our room had plenty of space, including a seating area and tv, and the bed was really comfortable. There was enough kitchen room to cook dinner, even with all our admin spread out. The loch is only a few meters from the door, with a jetty for an easy swim or cold water dip, and we could see the mountains from the room. A real gem of a Motel. We’d happily come back and recommend it.

The loch and the mountain peaks showing through the mist made for a beautiful view. I stopped for tea and a snack a few months ago, though I have to agree with another negative review: the proprietor wasn’t friendly and came across as weirdly aggressive.

We nearly skipped this place after seeing some negative reviews, but our visit turned out to be completely different. The owners were warm, welcoming and full of stories, and we had some brilliant conversations. The views were among the best we’ve seen, the food was delicious, the service was spot-on, and everything was clean and thoughtfully arranged. You can tell the owners care. I’d give it six stars if I could. Anyone complaining should stop being a snowflake. It’s a gem, and we’ll definitely be back.
