We were staying at a nearby B&B, so this is just about the restaurant. We got seated quickly without a booking, and there were quite a few other diners, possibly hotel guests. The dining rooms felt cramped and dated, and the menu was limited. The macaroni cheese came with garlic bread and a small salad. I’d hoped it might include local cheese. My husband’s steak pie came with gravy, mushy peas and a generous pile of chips. Both meals were satisfactory. I had chocolate cake with custard for dessert, but the custard didn’t taste homemade, so I used only a little. It was an acceptable meal, standard pub food.

We’d booked a table by phone before arriving, but were told there was no table and no food because the staff had gone home early. The man behind the bar said he was alone. That seemed odd given the pub had advertised a Halloween evening. He suggested a pub four miles away and said he’d call the manager to tell them we were coming and arrange a discount. At The Crown Hawes, they didn’t know who we were, so there was no discount. We didn’t go back to the Rose and Crown during the rest of our stay in Bainbridge.

The pies were amazing, and the service was brilliant. It’s a proper dog-friendly place, too. We found the pub welcoming, with clean, comfortable rooms full of character. It would make a perfect local if it were closer to home.

We had a great night out with a big group. The beer was good quality and good value, and the staff made us feel very welcome. It’s a characterful pub, and the new management team have been a welcome improvement.
