The countryside around Middleham is beautiful, with plenty to explore nearby, and breakfast gave me a great start for cycling. I spent two lovely nights midweek at the Black Bull and stayed in room 1, which was spacious, with a large double bed and a superb shower. Sam, Harriet and the rest of the team were terrific hosts. Staying there made me feel part of the local community, and I’ll be back soon.

We only meant to stop by for quiz night while staying in a village cottage, but had such a laugh with everyone that I didn't want to leave. The locals made us feel so welcome, and by the end I felt like one of them. 🍺

We both went for the Steak and Ale pie, and it was delicious with its triple-cooked chips, mushy peas and red wine gravy. A lovely traditional pub, with friendly staff, good home-cooked food and a couple of great pints.

The locals are still friendly, but the beer range has lost the variety and local character it used to have. It now feels like the pub has given in to pub company pressure and sold out, which is a shame because it used to be one of our favourites when visiting Middleham. The beer itself is fine, just the sort you can get in any pub, and the individual red wine my wife ordered was awful.

We stopped by in mid-July 2021 and found this a pleasant spot for an evening drink outside. It gets the last of the sunshine in the square, and there are different meals and ales at reasonable prices. The staff were helpful and pleasant, though outdoor seating is limited.
