The Steam Packet Inn

The beer garden overlooks the river and is stunning, full of lovely plants and flowers. Inside, the accommodation was just right for our three-night stay, with a kitchen and dining area as well as the bed and ensuite. Marc was a great chef. Breakfast was beautifully presented, and the scrambled eggs were the best I’ve tasted. We felt very welcome. A real gem.

We live nearby and came in to try the roasts we’d heard so much about. It lived up to the praise: tasty, generous, and with all the things I want in a roast. There’s an interesting range of drinks too. I had a half pint of London Black, a rich stout that went well with my meal, while my partner chose a pint of Crafty Pheasant cider. Recommended for the food and atmosphere. They also have live music on Sundays.

We came to see Chris Spedding, the extraordinary session guitarist, but the atmosphere spoiled the evening for us. It felt like a Reform party meeting, and as black and mixed race people we were made to feel unwelcome while sharing a table and seating with others. We’ve enjoyed the pub before, so it’s a shame for us and the owners, but we won’t return.

We had a brilliant Sunday lunch, and live music topped off the afternoon. The studio room was enjoyable for our stay, with everything we needed and a great breakfast. It was a little cramped, but very good for a short visit.
