The private room was really nice, especially the fairly modern shower and toilet. Daytime staff were great, though the evening staff seemed moody and didn’t really want to talk. The lobby and social area felt pointlessly dark and humid, so not very sociable in my view. The location works if you like walking alongside a main road, or taking the hourly bus to the airport. Liverpool YHA is decent, somewhere in the middle, neither the best nor the worst.
It was a little pricey on the weekend I stayed. The staff were friendly and the location by the docks was good. The en suite dorms were clean, with solid bunks and power, but no light or curtain. A large locker was provided, though you need your own padlock. The shared kitchen was good, and the common areas were comfortable and welcoming. Towels cost extra. The Wi-Fi was terrible, as it often is at YHA, and it’s an open network, so use a VPN.
The girls I met were really cool, so this hostel felt more social than some of the others I’ve stayed in. That also means lots of loud people, and sometimes they’re disruptive when you’re trying to relax in the common area. Staff are helpful and usually very kind once you get to speak to them, though the front office can be hard to reach when they’re busy. The room is nice, but some power outlets don’t charge at all and others are very slow. The upstairs bathroom toilets don’t flush, which seemed odd. The Wi-Fi is absolutely miserable, so you’ll need good data unless you want to get annoyed quickly. Don’t do laundry here if you can avoid it. It costs 10 pounds, the machines are tiny and barely handle large loads. I tried to get my clothes out early, but the machine locked them in. I had to restart the whole load and wait almost three hours to get them clean. The food is okay, not great but not awful. It’ll do if you have no energy to go out, though I wouldn’t recommend it if you want something good.
Friendly, welcoming staff and a good location. For the price, the rooms are great, clean and comfortable. You can hear traffic, but that’s to be expected in the middle of a city.
This was my fifth stay. The staff are polite and very thorough about checking IDs, which earns an extra star from me. The rooms and bathrooms are consistently meticulously clean, and the mattress is very comfortable. Bedding is immaculately fresh. It gets very, very warm in the room. If you’re in a shared dorm, you may not get a good sleep, though that’s outside anyone’s control. The wall insulation isn’t great, so noise can be an issue. Still, for the price they charge, I’d give it five stars.
