We had a pleasant three-night stay at the Novotel Liverpool Centre during our first short visit to Liverpool over half term. The hotel’s central location meant we could walk everywhere. Our superior room was comfortable, and the queen bed was bigger than I expected, maybe US size, with a mattress that was just the right firmness for me. The sofa bed was smaller than I’d hoped, so one child ended up sleeping with me. Its much softer mattress didn’t bother my other child. The separate toilet is practical, though the only sink is in the shower room. A tiny sink by the toilet would make it perfect. The shower pressure was fantastic, but our room didn’t have the magnifying makeup mirror advertised on the website, which was disappointing. Breakfast had plenty of choice and the pancake machine was a hit with adults and kids. The hot breakfast and some other items were mass-catering quality, not great, though about what I’d expect from comparable places. There were good alternatives, including cheese, fresh fruit, baguettes, yoghurts, seeds, dried fruit, and a great range of Clipper teas. The pool and gym were nice extras, but hard to enjoy when it was busy over half term. They operated a booking system to manage the flow. Good value and worth a visit.

Room 308 was perfect, and I hope I get it every time I stay. I arrived early expecting to leave my bags, but my room was ready before 1pm. The receptionist was lovely, though I didn’t catch her name, and I’m pretty sure I was upgraded, which was a nice surprise. The big comfy bed and little treats in the room were thoughtful touches. I felt very welcome. I was happily lounging in the room and didn’t get around to my welcome drink. I’ll definitely be back and would absolutely recommend this hotel.

The staff were sort of helpful, but much of the service felt like people going through the motions. The handyman was pleasant and happy. I know everyone works hard, but a smile and some politeness matter when customers have paid. The room was large and basic, with no water, and it was very, very hot. Staff quickly brought a small fan, which was helpful, but it wasn’t enough, and I can see many people struggling with the heat. The bar had good food. I hesitated to write this because I later learned the barman had a painful shoulder, but at the time I ordered a couple of drinks, he was short, rude, abrupt, and kind of passive-aggressive. I asked for a diet voke with ice for my friend. He said no ice, and when I repeated that I wanted ice, he told me I hadn’t said that, though I had. The way he said it felt off. Later, while serving our meal, he said his shoulder hurt. I do have empathy, but I don’t think that means he should make me feel like I’m the problem or make me feel small. It was 263 for two nights in a very hot room with a rude barman and staff who were only sort of helpful.

The rooms were quiet, and the location was good. Breakfast looked okay, with omelettes available. The rooms are dated and laid out in an unusual way: the toilet is separate from the shower and sink, so you have to open another door to wash your hands. The iron wasn’t in great shape, but at least they had one.

The staff were very friendly and courteous, and the rooms had comfortable beds and great-quality bedding. It’s a lovely location, very close to the docs and Liverpool one. Breakfast was okay, though it could do with a little more variety. Having the WC in a separate room from the shower and wash basin was a bit inconvenient. Still, money well spent.
