The library was beautifully decorated and felt luxurious but welcoming, and we were able to have our afternoon tea gathering there. The tea was made with high quality produce, served well and in generous amounts, so it was good value. The staff were attentive and the service was excellent. The young man handling the bill patiently explained it several times and is a credit to the hotel. His colleague, who served the tea and food, was also excellent and sorted out our booking. I do have two suggestions for management. I emailed to book and included dietary requirements, but had to chase more than once before hearing that my message had been forwarded to the head chef. I emailed again for an update and got no reply. When I finally phoned, no booking had been made. I paid the deposit over the phone and confirmed everything, yet on arrival the staff didn’t know about the reservation or dietary needs. The team on duty handled it very professionally, but this could have been avoided. It would help to improve how emails are checked and how bookings are recorded so the staff on duty can find the details.

The library was such a treat, I could have spent days in there, and the hotel is beautiful with lovely historic features. Even in midwinter, the grounds were lovely. We’d definitely like to return to spend more time exploring the library. A few things let us down. The billiards room clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time, though we still played a few games and the table was in good condition. It’s a shame, as the room itself was gorgeous. Most staff were lovely, apart from one person at Romanas restaurant. The restaurant was disappointing too, with a small menu and more than a third of the items unavailable. Breakfast was fabulous, and the food at the clocktower bistro was lovely. It’s a shame that bistro wasn’t open for dinner as an alternative to the Italian restaurant.

The staff were a real credit to this beautiful hotel, the spa was wonderful, and the food was the best I’ve ever had across all the hotel’s eateries. We had a lovely weekend away, and my children had bought the trip for my 60th birthday. The poolside staff were lovely too. The rooms were spacious and kept in traditional decor, but the housekeeping was very poor. I felt as if we’d been put in the room as an afterthought. It was extremely dirty, with dust everywhere, including picture frames, chairs and chair legs, skirting boards, sink panelling and the bathroom radiator. The tea and coffee table was stained and had sugar in the tray. There was dust down the sides and on the legs of two beautiful chairs, and the curtains and chair seats were stained. The top of the shower hose had come apart, and the plughole was full of very dark hair, which turned my stomach. The toilet seat was disgusting and stained, with swollen wood when lifted, and it had left brown marks on the porcelain. There were also very large cobwebs hanging from different parts of the ceilings. These are basic cleaning jobs that should have been done. I have pictures to show the condition.

The building is beautiful, the staff were friendly and professional, and the spa was fantastic. We had a lively stay, with a lively pool, gym and hot rooms. Dinner in the restaurant was lovely, with fantastic food and service. Breakfast was among the best we’ve ever had.

Public spaces were left untidy for days, the EV charger was broken, and the décor looked worn. The bathrooms had budget Carex soap, and the dining options were low quality. There was no room service or help with luggage, and reception had no staff after 9:00 PM. The hotel gave me a full refund because what I received was materially different from what had been sold. Expedia, Hotels.com, and Trivago advertised an official “Visit Wales 4-Star National Rating,” but Visit Wales confirmed in writing that the property has no active star grading. Management also admitted in writing that it is currently unrated and scrambling to arrange an anonymous inspection. I was paying 4-star prices for something that fell short of basic 3-star standards. Check the official registries before booking.
