The West Arms

The surroundings are absolutely beautiful, and the staff went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. A lovely place to stay.

We came for two nights at the end of August and had a really lovely stay. Nicky, Mark and the team were warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived, and did everything they could for us. The food was outstanding. The valley views are gorgeous, with lots of lovely walks nearby. Across the road there’s a fab gallery full of gems, and the area is a cyclist’s heaven, with spectacular scenery all around. It was lovely to unwind in the beautiful garden or sit by the fire with a glass of wine. We’ll definitely book again for winter 21. We chose somewhere different for our wedding anniversary, and The West Arms made it a really special occasion. The whole building was gorgeous, and we’d like to stay next time we visit. We were made very welcome, and the food was stunning. It wasn’t cheap, but I’d rather pay more for a really good meal than an average price for an average one. It’s probably the nicest meal we’ve had in years, and we can’t wait to return.

We had booked a one-night stay at The West Arms well in advance for 21/6/23, since we were attending a wedding nearby the next day. We also chose it because we’d spent our honeymoon there 43 years ago and hoped for a trip down memory lane. Getting through by phone was impossible, and it took days to get replies to questions about a possible late checkout. A few days before we were due, we were told the restaurant wouldn’t be open and our dinner reservation was cancelled. We booked a table at The Hand Inn across the road, as suggested. Then, a couple of days later, another text arrived, without even the courtesy of a phone call, saying the inn would be closed for the week. When my husband called, the owner was offhand, gave no apology or explanation, and said we could probably find somewhere else locally. So we booked at The Hand. In the end, The West Arms did us a favour. The Hand was superb, with a beautiful room, excellent food and welcoming, courteous staff. A tip for the owner of The West Arms: calling potential guests by their first names straight away and acting pally comes across as pretentious and overfamiliar, and doesn’t make up for treating guests so poorly.
