There is no hotel at Wythes road. We arrived after walking through run-down streets with boarded-up properties and found that 64 Wythes road (Metro London City Hotel) is a house converted into bedsits. The person at the door said they'd arrange a lift to the hotel a few minutes away by car. I was furious because we'd booked it for its proximity to the airport. We were bundled into someone's car and driven rather recklessly to Pier road. That was more bedsits, not a hotel, with an entrance between two fast-food places. We were told we could get a train in the morning. The room had been refurbished, and the sheets were clean, but the windows were broken. They shut at the bottom but had a large gap around the sides and top. I know how to close a window, and these were broken. At about 9:30pm someone upstairs started hoovering. Traffic outside was so loud it kept us from sleeping, and some buses and trucks made the bed shake. Sitting on the toilet, my knees touched the wall. This is deceptive: there's no hotel, and the name makes it sound like you're near the airport and getting a proper hotel.

Before booking, do some research and read the TripAdvisor reviews. The listing photos aren't clear, and there are lots of smashed windows boarded up. It looks much more like a hostel than a hotel. The owner also lied to us on the phone about payments and hung up on us. I strongly wouldn't recommend staying here.

This is a hostel, not a hotel, with the feel of a typical London house in a typical neighbourhood. The beds are cosy and comfortable, and the service was helpful and friendly. It's extremely close to the airport and DLR, so it works well for 1-3 nights. One tip: after leaving the airport or DLR, take the elevators down to floor -1 for Drew road. That brings you straight to the street where the place is and saves about a 10-minute walk.

They cancelled our reservation before we got there, then charged us the full price anyway. We had to find somewhere else to stay, and I still haven't received a refund. I felt intimidated. This is a house on a council estate, not a hotel, even though it's advertised on several reputable websites.

A handy Gateway Airport, easy to reach and a good way to get out of London without dealing with the major airports.
