Avonmore Hotel Cartwright Gardens

I slept well because the room was clean and comfortable, with no noise while I slept. The staff were very pleasant, and the hotel is in a super location for both Kings Cross and Euston train stations. Highly recommend.

My family arrived to find there was less accommodation than we’d booked, and the bathroom was unhealthy, with black mould all over the shower. The hotel refused to give us a full refund, so we had to pay extra to book somewhere else for the evening. If you want black mould in the bathroom and no refund after misleading advertising, this is the place for you. Six out of five stars. Strong recommendation to avoid the Avonmore at Cartwright.

The kids loved the Harry Potter style stairs and the feel of the room. The room itself was lovely, the beds were comfy, and the location was great. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint.

The bathroom was squeaky clean, which is the only positive thing I can say. In the room, the lamp kept flickering, the carpets were worn, the walls needed paint, the bed felt older than the building, and there were noises in the bathroom. If you didn’t copy the WiFi password at reception, too bad, it wasn’t in the room. My partner had booked the hotel and specifically mentioned my mobility issues, but I was put on the top floor up a narrow, steep staircase. It felt unsafe even without mobility concerns. I was travelling for work with an early morning ahead, so I didn’t have the energy to argue. When I asked the receptionist what the hotel does with copies of guests’ IDs, since I’d never been asked for one at a hotel in the UK before, he went on an aggressive, rude rant about it being a family-run business and that he “knows better.” I understood there might be a policy and handed over my ID without arguing, but surely I can ask what happens to my personal data without being met with hostility? He told me I could book somewhere else if I didn’t like it. This was at 10 PM, and I’m a woman travelling alone. Then he made a comment about me being a foreigner and suggested that was why the police might be interested in me, making it a legitimate reason to copy my ID. Seriously? Maybe I don’t stay in enough “family-run” hotels in the UK, but this place is definitely in my *international* top 5 worst stays.
