The room was on the fourth floor, reached by steep, narrow stairs that lead almost to the attic, and there's no elevator. Inside, there was a broken fan without a stand, and the bathroom was tiny, more like a dirty airline restroom than a proper bathroom. The place didn't look like the pictures at all. I didn't even feel safe walking barefoot because the rug looked as if the last guests had died on it. Now I understand the no-cancellation policy. I'd booked six days and wish I'd booked none.

The reservation team kindly accepted my parcel before I arrived, but that was the one helpful part of the experience. This hotel belongs to Tophams Hotel, and the front desk person I met at check-in was snobbish. For a place meant to be fine, the service standards were poor. My first-floor room had no number and wouldn't lock properly. It also had an exposed-screw cabinet, an abandoned network cabinet, an old table and a strangely placed drawer. The ironing board kept the wardrobe door from closing. The hotel's photos looked decent, but the room was very different. I wouldn't recommend staying here.

For over £120 a night, this supposed three-star hotel was a letdown. I spent one night in a room along the road from the main hotel, down some steps at the back. The double bed had no headboard and its base had come apart. There were cups and a kettle but no tea or coffee, and the water tap was in the shower area. No chairs, and some of the lights didn't work. It might have been fine in a shared house for £30 a night.

The place seemed run down as soon as we entered, and our first room smelled musty and moldy. Its tiny en suite was literally in a cupboard and had such a strong mildew smell that we couldn't sleep with the door open. I complained angrily and got a different room for the next night, but there were urine stains on the curtain beside the toilet. The whole hotel felt unclean. Don't stay here.
