Grange Portland

The location was the only good part. There's no A/C in the room, so it was stuffy, and the basement room was awful. You could hear people on the sidewalk, and at 8:45 AM the staff were chatting as if they were sleeping next to you. The walls were that thin. The room smelled musty, the curtains were dirty, and the layout seemed poorly thought out. The tub was so small it felt like the Londontube. There was no bathroom fan, so after using the toilet, the smell was still there eight hours later when I got back from sightseeing. Breakfast cost 30 dollars USD and wasn't worth it. By US standards this was a 1-star or 0-star hotel. London is a great city, so pay more for somewhere better instead of staying in this dump.

The staff were great, and the location is hard to beat. Breakfast was just passable, though. The rooms are the real problem: no AC, windows that barely open, and the supplied fans can't reach the windows because there's no outlet nearby. The wallpaper is peeling, and the old mattresses are lumpy. This really doesn't feel like a four-star hotel.

Even after they upgraded me to what they called their best room, it still felt disappointing. The curtains were broken, paint was coming off the walls, and the bathroom was tiny with an odd shower. Breakfast is served at another hotel from the same chain on the same street. It was pretty basic, with very little choice. I don't think this place deserves four stars.

The room was clean, and the staff were friendly. It's a lovely hotel right by the British museum, and most of London's other sights are easy to reach on foot.
