We arrived at about 8 pm and, after flying in from the USA, slept late because of the time difference. The room was never serviced while we were out, so at 12:30 pm I had to call the front desk for towels and toilet paper. There was no spare roll, and the one left had only about a quarter on it. We'd put up a do not disturb sign early that morning. By 11 am GMT, housekeeping had pushed it under the door. I put it back on the handle, and it was pushed under again. They didn't seem concerned about letting us rest. This wasn't the kind of service we've always had at Holiday Inn Express in the USA.

At 1:15 in the night the fire alarm sounded for 15 minutes, and nobody explained anything to the guests. The hotel has 8 floors, with 4 lifts out of service all the time.

For a short, no-frills stay in London, this hotel is a good option. It's close to Old Street station, and our street-facing room stayed quiet enough that we weren't disturbed. The heating worked well, and although the rooms are basic, they were fine. The bed was too soft, though. Breakfast is simple and doesn't offer much variety, but it's decent for a continental meal, with cereal, pastries and milk. Better than nothing.

The location worked really well, near restaurants, bars and public transport. The staff were kind and helpful, and the rooms had plenty of space and nice decor. They weren't as clean as they could be, though, and there were a few maintenance problems. There's also no safe in the rooms for valuables.

I can't get through to the front desk because the number is disconnected, and every date I tried to book online showed no availability. I suspect the hotel has closed and is operating under private government contracts.
