The receptionist, Mr Roman, was very friendly and helpful. I could get here easily by bus from my work at Homerton Hospital in London, and Essex Road has several places to eat. One standout is the Sene-Gambian Walfathou Kitchen, which I reviewed separately. The place has some unusual quirks. The lift is like one in a superstore for disabled people: you have to hold the button to call it to your floor, then keep holding the floor button until you arrive. Let go early and it stops straight away. Finding your way around is another challenge. The corridors twist like a warren, with lots of fire doors and not enough signs to tell you what's behind them, so you have to try doors to find your room or the stairs. My room had an en suite toilet on a separate level, reached by very narrow, awkward steps. The bathroom itself was reasonably well appointed. The bed was mediocre, nothing worth mentioning, as you can see in the photos. Tea and coffee were available, but basic.

I didn't stay there, but I did book a room. I booked the wrong dates by mistake, something that could happen to anyone, and immediately asked Booking.com for a free cancellation and called the property. Booking.com did what it was supposed to, but despite several requests and calls, the hotel didn't help and kept delaying things. They seem not to care about their guests or support customers, perhaps just to make a little more money. I'd tell people to be careful before booking and choose somewhere else. Their rating isn't good anyway, in my opinion. I also complained about this attitude to Booking.com, if that makes any difference. Still, I think it's good to leave a note about it.

The shower was probably the best I've ever had, with amazing warmth and outstanding pressure, even if the shower cubicle was small. The desk staff were helpful and gave us extra duvets to make the bed more comfortable. But the room barely fits a double bed and a table, and the bed was so hard it felt like sleeping on the floor. Phone service was terrible, no one wanted to talk or help. Thin walls meant the maid was shouting, banging around and complaining about her job at 6-7am, so sleeping in wasn't an option. I wouldn't stay here again.

This place needs far more than another refurb, it feels like it should be torn down and rebuilt. The toilet and plugs don't work, and the mattress is prison-level. Every five minutes someone uses the lift and a buzzing sound fills the room, even at 3 a.m. Street noise and light are brutal, and there's barely room for a large suitcase. As someone who cares about other people, I'd urge you to find somewhere else to stay.

The bus stop right outside is handy, and I’d happily stay here again. The room was compact but had what I needed, including a fan, and the bed was comfortable. Everything was neat and clean, including the bathroom, where there were towels and toilet paper. The shower was easy to use.
