The Oyster and contactless readers need to be repaired or upgraded. At Clapham Common in particular, and at many other Underground stations, I’ve had repeated trouble with debit cards not being read and Apple Pay contactless failing on entry or exit. I’ve reported this to Cubic Transportation Systems and TFL. Cubic engineers need to get out there soon, since different customers and witnesses are raising complaints too. Having to tap three times before the barriers open is a clear sign the readers aren’t working properly.

The stairs are awkward in wet weather, and the Northern line is what you get for dealing with the station. What puts me off most is the single platform for trains in both directions. It feels unnerving when it’s empty and genuinely unsafe when crowded. I’d avoid it if you can.

I like that there’s one central platform, where you can get a great view and photos when trains pass in opposite directions. It’s a simple, clean station served by the Northern line. It gets busy, with buses and the Underground meeting nearby, plus an overground and train station not far off. There are plenty of places to shop, eat and drink. Clapham Common is close too, with walks, music events, funfairs, Winter Wonderland and more. The autumn scenery is lovely around now.

Before a walk around Clapham Common, this is a great station to head to. It’s usually not too busy, and there are cafes and shops nearby to visit before your journey. The island platform is lovely.

The island platform gives Clapham Common station a really distinctive look, and the neighborhood itself is pretty cool. I’d recommend visiting, especially if you’re into photography, since the platform is unusual.
