After the lease ended, the property went back to our client, The Cadogan Estate. They asked us, as London architects with relevant experience, to get Planning and Listed Building Consent to change it from commercial use back into an exceptional single-family home. We developed a scheme that could support the sale of a new lease by giving prospective buyers confidence that the house could work for modern living. The property is an elaborate 13,500 sqFt Grade 2* Listed late Victorian house and mews in the Hans Town Conservation Area. Its exuberant exterior is matched by highly detailed, top-quality finishes inside. Sir Ernest George designed it in 1886 at the forefront of the Queen Anne revival style. It's one of London's most complete and highest-quality Victorian houses. The challenge was to create comfortable contemporary family spaces and improve circulation across six fragmented floors, while protecting the important Listed interiors. We also needed the agreement of the many conservation authorities with an interest in the property. Our proposal added a lift to the main house, renewed all the building services and radically reworked the mews house. This created the main contemporary and traditional family spaces needed to make it viable as a modern home and genuinely secure its future. Following very detailed negotiations, we persuaded the Planners to approve the proposal in 2015.
