The apartment felt like a tired student bedsit from the 1980s, which was a real shame in an otherwise fairly plush hotel. The decor was bleak and soulless, very different from the website photos. Most walls were bare, some paintwork was visibly patched, the carpet was stained, and both the sofa and bed headboard had unpleasant gold lame plastic covering. The dining table was plastic with a sheet over it, making it look like an altar, and only one chair was provided. There were no bedside lights. One was brought on request, but it had a two-pin plug, so I had to ask for an adapter as well. The kitchen had no kettle; when I asked, they brought an ancient one with a loose lid. We heard a neighbour calling reception with similar complaints, so it wasn't just us. It felt as if no care or imagination had gone into the apartment decor, almost as though the apartments had a different management team from the main rooms. There is good potential here. The Meliá Apartments are within the main Meliá White House Hotel and offer self-catering facilities, though we chose the breakfast option. Our studio was more spacious than a standard room, with a basic kitchenette and sofa, and the bathroom's tiling and fittings were attractive. The bed was very large and comfortable. The public areas are attractive, the location right beside Regents Park is outstanding, and the staff were great. Breakfast had a wide buffet selection and was pretty good, with one caveat: only two of the four coffee machines were working, so the queues were long. If you book one of these apartments, I'd ask for a refurbished room that matches the website pictures. They could be really excellent, but at present it feels like a missed opportunity.

The apartment’s condition was the worst part. Loose bathroom tiles cut my feet more than once when I walked barefoot, and the hotel photos didn’t show what it was really like. After we complained repeatedly, we were moved to the hotel, which I appreciated, but it took far too much persistence. Check-in was a mess too. I arrived at 3pm and was told check-in wasn’t until 4pm. When I returned at 3:50pm, they said the room still wasn’t ready, took our passports, then left us waiting at reception for about 30 minutes. After 4:10pm I still had to insist several times before we got a room. It felt chaotic and dehumanising. The breakfast change I’d paid extra for wasn’t applied until we got to the restaurant, where I had to sign the bill in front of people waiting behind us. I was told restaurant charges could go to my room, but had to return to reception to set that up, then go back to the restaurant to pay. When the lift stopped working, my key card failed too, so I had to walk between reception on the ground floor and the 8th floor twice to sort it out. Neither the stay nor the restaurant spending earned points in my membership account. The 10% dining discount from the booking wasn’t applied either. I’d planned to use Meliá points for extra expenses, but was told I couldn’t because the booking was in the apartment, which hadn’t been explained when I reserved. I sent detailed feedback through the hotel questionnaire and got a reply, but my actual concerns weren’t properly acknowledged or followed up. As a Meliá Gold member, this was nowhere near what I expect. It was easily the worst hotel stay I’ve had, and it’s made me seriously reconsider staying with Meliá.

Kavya was the highlight for us. She went out of her way to get our room issues sorted quickly and make sure everything was taken care of. We really appreciated her help. The location was also super convenient for getting around. Rooms are comfortable enough for a short stay, though nothing fancy.

The kitchen is tiny, has no ventilation, and feels neglected. The bed was much too soft for me, and the room overall wasn’t worth the price. It feels like a one-star room in a four-star hotel: outdated, with broken tiles, dirty corners, no outlets by the bed, and a cheap shower curtain that sticks to you. I don’t recommend it. The room quality just isn’t worth paying for a four-star hotel.

The mattress was awful, and there was a curry smell in our room. The staff were all really kind to us, though. With better sleep, this would have been a perfect spot.
