There are no hotplates in the kitchen, so you can’t cook. They call the place non-profit, but seem to try to charge for everything. It’s a religious scout place, and they ask on arrival whether you belong to the community. If you don’t, you’re not treated well. Pictures of child scouts are displayed throughout the common areas. I booked a single bed in a three-person female dorm, as the listing said, but was given a metal bunk. Every time someone moved, it felt like an earthquake, and the room looked nothing like the picture. The receptionist said a single bed meant a bunk bed, refused to give me what I’d paid for, and said I’d have to pay another £70 for a single bed.

Our guide was a very pleasant, knowledgeable student nurse from Texas. We visited in August, and my wife, a lifelong GS, had dreamed of seeing a world lodge for years. I’m a GS too. We were both thrilled to visit Pax lodge and were pinned in a ceremony. We also swapped patches with Girl Guides and shopped in the store. So much fun.

Excellent value, with a car park too. Everything was spotlessly clean and welcoming.

A great hostel, with a fascinating history for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Its location was perfect for a weekend in London.

The hostel is easy to reach from central London by both bus and metro. We stayed for two nights in a double room with two single beds. The room was simple and well cleaned, and there were plenty of toilets and showers.
