Pembury Hotel

We ended up leaving at 6am with our four year old after changing rooms three times. The first smelled awful. The next had small bathroom bugs, not ants, and a large cockroach was running around at 5am. We couldn’t sleep after finding the bugs. In the third room, another cockroach was walking around, so we gave up and ran from the place. There was a constant, awful damp sewer smell through the corridors and bathrooms, despite the recent refurbishment, which seemed to mean painting the walls, doors, and open “wardrobes” with white wall paint. The food wasn’t any better. Breakfast came in paper bags in the room, with cold pancakes, spoiled yogurt, and green, inedible bananas. Nobody told us this before booking. The staff were nice and seemed embarrassed, but said they couldn’t refund us and that we’d have to ask the manager. It was Sunday, and the manager doesn’t work weekends. We’ve now repeatedly contacted Mrs. Masha Jones, the manager, for a refund because of the pests, and after three working days there’s still no reply. We surely won’t stay again. If you end up there, maybe don’t look around your room on a weekend, or better yet, never stay there.

A nice hotel for a relatively low price, with good quality overall. The rooms are a little small, but fine for a night or two. It’s well located, near the tube station and just across the road from the park. Breakfast was good and self-service, with staff around to help. There’s also a nice cafe on site selling cakes and sandwiches to take away.

I was travelling alone for work, and the single room met my needs. It was quiet and comfortable, though worn, and still clean and tidy. The bathroom was small but the shower was great. Breakfast was basic. I’d stay again for work.

The staff were friendly and happy to help with anything we needed. The building is old, so there’s barely any soundproofing and you hear everything. There’s no air conditioning or fan available, even though it was February and the rooms shouldn’t have been so hot. The bathrooms are tiny, though I know London rooms tend to be small. Not the best place to stay, but you get what you pay for.
