The window was broken and wouldn't shut, so the humming ventilation from the lightwell kept us awake for half the night. The bed creaked and had what felt like a World War I mattress. For £70 a night at Piccadilly Backpackers, our double room had little else: a plastic chair and four coat hooks on the wall, no wardrobe, table, or bedside lamp, just a cold neon ceiling light. I've maybe stayed in worse places, though I'm not sure. What I am sure about is that I haven't paid £70 a night for them. The sheets had holes, and the blankets seemed old enough to have been used in the English Civil War. Prison cells are more comfortable than this ridiculous hostel room, and much cheaper too.
