St George Hotel

We knew the hotel would be small from the reviews, but sitting on the toilet with the door shut was uncomfortable because my knees hit it. We’d booked with a 1300 check-in time, but on arrival were told our room wouldn’t be ready until 1700. They let us leave our luggage, though it was kept in the main hallway, not behind a counter or locked away. The WiFi signal in our room was terrible and barely worked. A maid also came in even though we had a do not disturb sign on the door.

It’s good value for central London, and the rooms are clean and well kept. At the front of the building, the road noise can be a problem, and the mattress wasn’t great. It’s annoying that there’s no iron in the room and you have to ask the front desk for one, but for this price it’s still quite good.

The room was in the basement beside the laundry and staff rooms. When we asked to move, they said no straight away without trying to help. The windows didn't have locks, and we felt misled by the hotel's photos. There are no elevators, the amenities are poor, and the service was lacking. It felt more like a motel. We were very disappointed. Not worth it at all.

The building and location are nice, and the room was good, but the bed and single pillow each were really hard. There wasn't any staff around in the evening to ask for another pillow or a swap. The sheets were sparse, didn't fit well, and felt a bit like hospital bedding. The bath was stained and worn, too. Worst of all, the loose towel rail by the toilet door kept catching us, and we both ended up with several bruises on our left hips. Fine for one night, but I wouldn't want to stay longer.
