The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. When I stopped to photograph the model elephant in the entrance, the light wasn’t good enough. A uniformed man appeared, offered me a flash, attached it to my camera, and handed it back with a smile. That’s great service. The hotel is stylish and distinctive, with each room designed differently. I also loved the afternoon tea at the Hempel lounge bar: fresh sandwiches, light plain and raisin scones with clotted cream and homemade jam, and a tempting selection of desserts. The loose-leaf tea was brewed perfectly. I had the silver needle.

The food is just as much of the draw as the tea at The Hempel's Zen Afternoon Tea. There are freshly made finger sandwiches, pastries from The Hempel's patisserie, and warm plain and raisin scones with Devonshire clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. The tea menu is broad and focused on quality organic teas, served in a serene setting. For caffeine-free, there are whole pink rosebuds with a light, sweet taste, or fresh peppermint for something refreshing and energising. Tea lovers can choose Assam, Bohea Lapsang, Earl Grey Supreme, or Darjeeling Second Flush, described as the champagne of teas. Jasmine Pearls and Silver Needles are also options.

Loved it. Small and luxurious.
