We came across this pub on a family walk around Looe, two adults and two kids, and I’m so glad we did. The landlady and landlord were wonderfully friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. They were happy to chat about the incredible history of the place and some of the spirits, beyond the ones behind the bar. The food was all top quality. I had the beef Sunday roast in a bucket-sized Yorkshire pudding, with superb roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy. The kids had chicken curry with rice and naan, and my wife had roast vegetables. The hardest part was leaving to carry on our walk. We sat at the same table Sean Connery visited in 1958, though that’s recent history for a pub opened in 1516. Highly recommend it for the food, drinks, service and kindness.

A Thursday visit gets you two hours with the shanty band, and everyone’s encouraged to join in. It’s a real taste of Cornwall, so book ahead. This is a fantastic, authentic pub with friendly staff, delicious food, plenty of vegetarian options and reasonable prices.

The rooms were clean, the food was great and the staff were friendly. Shanty night was a highlight: we sang our heads off and thoroughly enjoyed it. A fantastic stay in a fantastic pub. We’ll be going back. Thank you for everything, Mr&Mrs Land.

We enjoyed the food and staff when we stopped in for tea during the week, then came back for Sunday lunch, which was great too. The reason for four stars is the £1.95 charge for each extra gravy. That doesn’t seem reasonable when you’re already buying extras. Otherwise, I’d strongly recommend it.

A great place to go, with fantastic staff, good food and excellent Guinness. It’s one of the two traditional old pubs left in Looe, and just a nice pub all round.
