The Wheatsheaf Inn

We went for dinner with family recently and were really impressed. The meal had character, and the service was wonderful. The short rib beef was especially tender, and the chips might be the best I’ve ever had. Puddings came nicely presented in generous portions, with practically a bucket of custard alongside. We went in without expectations and everything was delicious. Very pleased, and we’ll visit again.

The Sunday lunch was proper, honest roast dinner, and great value. Seven of us had the beef, served in two thick, generous pieces with no fat. It was soft and fell apart, and the vegetables were cooked just right: roast potatoes, mash, cauliflower cheese, peas, carrots, runner beans and broccoli, plus a huge gravy boat. After a good meal on Friday, I’d chatted with the landlady, who told me she and her husband do the cooking and suggested we try Sunday lunch. She was spot on. We all loved it, and the puddings were lovely too. Well done to the team.

I’d read good reviews, but my visit didn’t live up to them. There wasn’t much choice of ales. When I asked to taste them, the woman was okay about the first sample but less so about the second. She was abrupt, and when I asked where else might serve food since they weren’t doing any, she didn’t offer much help. My tiny dachshund was quietly sitting on a seat, but she rudely told me dogs couldn’t be on the furniture. After that, I felt very unwelcome.

Our large party got their meals, but mine never came. When staff came out to ask if anyone wanted more food, I had to call out that it would be nice to get something to stave off the hunger, then I left. About ten minutes later, while I was waiting for a lift, they came to the door and said my food was on the table. I really wouldn’t recommend the place.
