Breakfast was a highlight. I had the full English, cooked perfectly with great ingredients and served piping hot. Loved it. We stayed three nights at this modernised 14th-century coach inn. It’s clean and comfortable, with the creaky floorboards you’d expect from an old building. The location is ideal, close to the high street, and there’s free parking for residents and a pub next door. Our room faced the courtyard and was very quiet, despite the earplugs provided. A couple of coat hooks would be useful, since there’s plenty of space and it would save hanging coats on a chair. We went Sunday to Wednesday and found lots of bars and buildings closed on Monday and Tuesday.

The final bill was a lovely surprise, they gave us a great deal. A huge thank you to the two managers for their brilliant service. We held my uncle’s wake here, and from our first conversation they were welcoming, friendly and made all the arrangements easy. The food was hot, fresh, tasty and nicely presented. They also prepared a separate plate for me, the niece arranging everything, to suit my restrictive diet. I really appreciated it, and it was delicious. I even had leftovers to take home for supper. My uncle travelled from Cornwall for the funeral and stayed at the hotel. His first room was cold, but they moved him as soon as he mentioned it. He said everything and everyone else was lovely. I’d highly recommend them for their attention to detail and customer service. Thank you again.

Breakfast was delicious, we had the full English, and I loved the historical decor and framed pictures around the hotel, including the suit of armour. There’s also a pretty courtyard where you can have a drink. The hotel sits at the top of the high street, which was a great location, though do remember the street is a hill. Our top-floor room was a little wonky, with a tilted floor and bed, as you’d expect in an old building. It was fine for us, but might bother someone prone to vertigo, and ground-floor rooms are available. There was some outside noise, not the hotel’s fault, and the church bells rang every 15 minutes, possibly not overnight. Earplugs were provided. It was hot, so we left the window open. The room had a fan, a heater for cooler months, a kettle with tea and hot chocolate, and a small coffee machine. Parking is free with plenty of spaces, though it’s also public pay-and-display parking, so a space isn’t guaranteed when busy. We enjoyed our stay and would come again, but I’d request the ground floor next time because of the sloping floor.

Chloe and Emma made our Christmas stay at the Blue Boar special over several nights. They were friendly, familiar and professional, and really went above and beyond. The historic building gave the comfortable rooms a homely feel, and breakfast was excellent too. If you’re staying in Maldon, I couldn’t recommend the Blue Boar more.

There’s no evening food at the hotel, and the bar area gets very noisy, though earplugs are left in the rooms. The location just off the high street makes the shops, cafes and restaurants easy to reach. Parking is at the rear, but you need to sign in and register your vehicle at reception.
