The room and the entrance both felt gloomy and run-down, and the bedding left us itchy and uncomfortable all night. We paid £120, which felt nowhere near worth it. Had we known what we were getting, I wouldn’t have paid 20p. At Smedley Guest House, the reception area felt strange and unprofessional. At night there was a woman asleep at reception who looked unwashed, and the smell throughout the area was awful. The room was old, dark and dingy, more like an unused classroom or basement than guest accommodation. It opened straight onto a scary back alley. We also felt unsafe because the doors didn’t seem to lock properly. While I was asleep, someone got into the room unexpectedly. I woke up to find part of my eyebrow shaved off, which ruined the stay. There was also a lot of suspicious activity outside, making the area intimidating late at night. When we called to complain, the man who answered got defensive. He insisted the woman wasn’t homeless or asleep, saying she was his wife and followed him to work. Instead of addressing the room and security issues, he shouted that I shouldn’t say his wife sleeps at reception, and wouldn’t accept responsibility for my eyebrow. This was one of my worst stays. I wouldn’t return or recommend it. I feel sick here. PS, stay away from Bent Street around the corner, robbers.

I stayed a couple of nights and was really happy with the room and the welcome at Queens Guest House. The rooms looked great, felt cosy and were very clean, and reception was warm and genuinely helpful. Everything exceeded my expectations. The price was good and the location convenient. I can see they’re working to improve and upgrade the place, as the receptionist told me. I’m not sure why some people leave negative comments. I’d gladly come back, highly recommended.

The bathroom was a disgrace. The sink was cracked, insulation was exposed behind the sink and toilet, and there was obvious mould or mildew in the shower. The bathroom lock had been ripped off, and the handle was screwed on with eleven screws. The rest of the room wasn’t much better. It stank of cigarette smoke, and although we booked a “comfort triple,” it had only two beds. The booking only let us choose one or two people despite it being a triple, which was odd. There were just two of us, but we’d expected the extra space. The main door keyhole looked as though it had been hit with a hammer, wallpaper was peeling, there was damp near the ceiling, and two glass panes were cracked and loose. We regretted coming as soon as we walked in. We found a nearby Travelodge Riverside that was cheaper and much better. Wish we’d checked there first. Queens guest house is the worst hotel I’ve ever seen.

We left immediately, without spending the night, and had to pay extra for somewhere else nearby. A guest we encountered on arrival made us feel very uncomfortable and unsafe, which confirmed our decision. I don’t leave bad reviews lightly, and I’ve stayed in basic places before, but this was shocking and nowhere near acceptable. The stale cigarette smell hit us as soon as we opened the door, and the room wasn’t what we booked. We’d reserved a Comfort Triple but were given a tiny twin with two beds and none of the space we’d paid for. The door lock area looked damaged, the wallpaper was peeling, there was visible damp near the ceiling, and two loose, cracked window panes seemed unsafe. The bathroom was worse: cracked sink, exposed pipes and insulation behind the sink and toilet, mould in the shower, a missing lock, and a handle crudely refitted with multiple screws. We arrived on 18th January and knew within five minutes that we couldn’t stay. This place didn’t match its description and fell short on cleanliness, safety and comfort. I’d advise people to avoid it.

For the price, it was adequate, and I wasn’t expecting luxury. But the shower was mouldy and in poor shape, and there was hair in the bed. Cheap as I could find, and apparently for good reason. Hygiene issues weren’t what I expected.
