Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa

The hotel had several lovely rooms to unwind in, with beautiful furnishings, log fires in some, and stunning views. My sister and I spent half a day at the spa, and the staff there were brilliant. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and our meal was excellent, easily five stars. Everything was fantastic.

The food was superb, and the rooms are stunning. The property itself is gorgeous, and the staff were so helpful that my bags had been taken up to my room by the time I returned for my key in the afternoon. I hope the spa renovations turn out as well as they seem likely to. I’d also like to see the hotel cut down on plastic. The little toiletries and all the water bottles in the room feel unnecessary when larger refillable containers and a glass bottle could be used instead.

We had a beautiful room up in the eaves on the second floor, with a huge bed and an amazing bathroom. After settling in, we had drinks at the Bar, then dinner at The Keepers. The food was just right after a busy Christmas period, and we slept really well before having a lovely breakfast. The Christmas decorations made the place feel magical, with trees everywhere. We arrived shortly after 3 and two lovely reception staff took our bags, welcomed us with a complimentary Rum Punch in the Great Hall, gave us a quick tour, and showed us to our room. From arrival to leaving around midday the next day, the one-night stay was exceptional. I’d highly recommend Matfen Hall for a special treat.

Sophie really made our spa visit special. She was attentive all the way through, happy to help with anything, and never overbearing. Everyone else we met was friendly, welcoming and helpful too. The facilities are fantastic, and the space feels relaxing and thoughtfully put together. Renovations are still underway, but the work completed so far is lovely and you can see how beautiful it could be when finished. I’d absolutely recommend a visit and will be back.
