The Bear on the Square

The room itself was tidy, clean and comfortable, but I couldn't reach the high window catches to shut them. Noise from something happening in the square kept me awake until 3am. My husband is deaf, so it didn't disturb him, but I found it horrendous. We had booked two nights, with the possibility of adding a third, for our wedding anniversary and a trip to Lake Windermere and other sights. After I heard of a serious illness at home, we had to end the visit early and cut short all our plans. The duty manager kindly offered to refund the unused night, but more than three weeks later I still haven't received the £65. I haven't had a reply to my email either, even though they have my contact details. The manager seemed delightful, but apparently couldn't get the refund sorted. I was also looking forward to the evening meal, which had been recommended. The illness ended in a death, and I haven't felt able to chase this up. £65 is a lot for a pensioner to lose. If the business is doing so badly, they can keep it as a donation toward an after-sales customer service course.

The wait for food was long, and what arrived was awful. My wrap was cold, the chicken had a strange texture, and the bottled sauce had no taste. The chips were all over the place, some hot and some cold. My husband's meal was okay, but nothing special. After reading other reviews, I wondered if I'd gone to a different pub. I wouldn't give this place a star.

We had dinner here while staying just outside Millom and went in with no expectations. The food won us over, with good flavours and generous portions, and the service was quick. Next time we're in town, we'd like to spend some time in the sports bar too. A nice place, and one I'd recommend if you're in Millom.

We won't be coming back. I left most of my meal and was ready to get out of there. The ribs were lukewarm, and the chips seemed to have been sitting around most of the day before being fried again. The salad was about the only thing that looked fresh. My other half said the steak and ale pie was alright, but had the same disappointing chips. We ate here last night, Mon 24/2/25, and the food was inedible. It came just 15 minutes after we ordered, which should have warned us. I can't imagine a chef who takes pride in their work sending food like that out.
