We’ll still come back for the oysters and mussels, but the atmosphere that once made this place feel special has gone. It was a disappointing visit. They’ve squeezed in more tables since we were last here, and the room now feels cramped and less welcoming. It seems unnecessary. The service was the bigger problem. We were asked for our drink order almost as soon as we picked up the menu, then forgotten. Our drinks were left at the bar until we asked about them, and the expensive white wine wasn’t properly chilled. There were plenty of staff about, but they seemed to wander without much purpose and were hard to flag down. We waited ages to order food, then had to ask several times for bread, butter, sauces, and even a finger bowl. Some staff also interrupted conversations and put coffees in front of just one of us. The food itself was excellent.

We haven’t stayed in the rooms, so this is just about the restaurant. On our first visit to The Mistley Thorn, lunch was seriously good. The portions were generous and the prices good. The room felt relaxed, with tables spaced well apart, and the staff were friendly and efficient. My wife’s Scottish squid, charred over coals and served in a main course portion, was a stunner. I had a generous plate of jumbo Shetland mussels in a lovely wine, herb and shallot sauce. It may have been the best moules marinière I’ve had in the UK. We’ll be back soon. Highly recommended.

What a lovely afternoon. The service was fantastic, and the seafood couldn’t have been fresher. We started with mackerel and oysters, then had the seafood platter and fish and chips. The wines were fab too. I’ve been to Scotland and followed the seafood trail, and honestly, I can’t recommend the Mistley Thorn enough. Though I almost shouldn’t, or getting a table might be harder next time 😭. We’ll definitely return. Thank you! ♥️🦐🦀🐟😋

The food was incredible, and that steak was so tender. Service was 10/10. We had a great weekend getaway at this gorgeous hotel. The rooms were lovely, and everyone was so kind and welcoming, helping us with anything we needed. Big thanks to everyone at the mistley thorne for a great stay. We’ll be back xx

We went today as a group of eight, with a newborn, and nothing was too much trouble. The menus have lovely choices, including a brilliant gluten-free selection, and the gluten-free bread was the best I’ve ever had. Fabulous food, amazing staff, and a wonderful venue. Thanks, we’ll be back!
