The only positive was the lovely, huge sitting rooms. The rest of our stay was awful. The classic room was tiny, badly laid out, nothing like the photos, and ridiculous in such a large building. The furniture was crammed in so tightly we could barely open the bathroom door, kept hitting the bedside table, and had nowhere to open a suitcase. The shower was in a cupboard, the basin was miniature and impossible to wash in, and there was black mould in the bathroom. When we asked for the advertised free Prosecco, the rude receptionist tried to say we were lying. Luckily I had a screenshot, and after a lot of arguing they gave in. Later they said it was an IT mistake, but they shouldn’t start by criticising the guest. Breakfast was awful too, in a canteen that looked more like a school dining room. A beautiful building for outside photos, but badly run and all for show. This is my first ever negative review online, but the experience was so poor I felt I had to say something.

The staff were lovely, and breakfast was lovely too. The hotel is beautiful, full of character, and set among beautiful gardens. I was there for one midweek night on a business trip. My room was small but comfortable, and the bed was comfortable as well. The bathroom was tiny and the shower had little power. It’s a very quiet hotel with not much going on.

The staff made everything feel easy. Everyone was kind and welcoming, helped arrange transport, and gave us thoughtful recommendations that really improved our trip. We missed breakfast by about half an hour on our first morning, but they kindly offered espresso and toast in the bar lounge. Those personal touches made the stay memorable. My husband and I loved wandering the grounds and all the rooms. It felt like being guests in a beautiful historic home, not just a hotel, and you can feel the property’s history in the hallways. Dinner at the restaurant was memorable too. The Old Fashioneds were smooth, strong, and perfectly balanced, with just the right sweetness and depth. They clearly take cocktails seriously. We left already looking forward to coming back.

The building and grounds are really impressive. We had the best Santa’s grotto experience, and all the staff were great, especially Santa, who was excellent with our shy 2yr old. Lunch in the restaurant afterwards was excellent quality and good value.

We had Sunday lunch in a very nice location, then coffee upstairs. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service was great. I took pictures from the upstairs window 10 minutes apart, and you can see the typical Scottish weather.
