We spent two nights in the Oriental Brewhouse, adjoining The Priory House, and it was a wonderful stay. The photos drew us in, and the real thing didn’t disappoint. This Grade II listed Elizabethan long house has a calm, peaceful feel, and the fascinating mix of decor is a treat whether you love history, beautiful interiors, or both. The striking wood panelling was brought from Karachi India by the famous explorer Sir Francis Younghusband. Upstairs, a spiral wrought iron staircase leads to a mezzanine bedroom with opening velux windows. They let in enough light without spoiling the restful feel. There’s a pretty kitchen with an oven, hob and a selection of cooking equipment, plus a bathroom with a small walk-in shower and a beautiful Victorian sink. The main room has lots of lighting options for setting the mood. Carole and Roger were perfect hosts, and it was a delight to meet them. Thanks for such a restful experience. We’ll definitely return 😀

My in-laws stayed here and didn’t feel very welcome. Even though it’s a B&B, they weren’t offered breakfast or even a cup of tea. They couldn’t use the shower, and while the decor is called “quirky,” it felt more like a jumble of car boot sale finds. There are no locks on the actual doors either, so privacy felt like an issue. They were very disappointed by what turned out to be a very expensive mistake. From their account, it’s very much not recommended, which is sad 🙁

The oriental brewery is one of a kind, and the welcome was so warm. We’ve stumbled across another fantastic place to stay. We’ll be back without a second thought.

After seeing the room and the House, we went elsewhere for a meal, then returned to 'The Priory' so I could fetch our cases. One of the Proprietors came out and asked what was wrong. I said it simply wasn’t suitable for us. It was filthy, cold, smelly and creepy. I’d never stay there, and it was the worst hotel I’ve ever visited. We’d booked after speaking with the owner. He seemed honest and sensible, and had described the place in detail. We’d agreed to pay cash on arrival, but once we saw it, we left.

Every view in this place is a delight, and the owners are lovely too. What a charming, elegant and opulent airb&b. It’s just absolutely lovely, and I’d highly recommend it for a luxurious, calming break.
