Square and Compass

The room was cozy, the pub had a lovely atmosphere, and the staff were so welcoming and fun to chat with. We came for Valentine’s and stayed the night. Our steak and wine from the set menu were delicious and really good value. Such a little hidden gem, we can’t wait to return.

The belly pork was cooked beautifully, and that 10oz rump steak was fantastic too. We had another lovely meal at The Square and Compass tonight. The staff and atmosphere are great, and the chef gets 10/10 from us. It’s already a favourite for us and our family, and we’ll keep coming back. If you haven’t visited yet, pop in, you won’t be disappointed.

We stopped for food in the middle of the afternoon on the way back from Linc's, so I can’t comment on the rooms. There’s plenty of parking beside the building, and we found the locals friendly and chatty. Two of the three lounge areas had lovely log fires going. Fay/Faye (?) behind the bar was cheerful, helpful, and seemed very good at her job. The mixed grill was huge, enough to put me in a meat coma, and everything was well cooked. I was a little disappointed by the sausage, though that may just be personal preference. The steaks were medium rare as ordered, including the ribeye. The chicken looked a bit anaemic but tasted fine, and I thought the lamb chop could use seasoning. The onion rings had a nice light, non-greasy coating. The cherry tomatoes on the vine were delicious, if a little awkward to eat. Salt and pepper were on the table, and I probably would’ve been dripping like a leaky tap if the meat had been seasoned more. A very pleasant stop for food or reasonably priced drinks. I’d happily go back, perhaps for Friday steak night.

I popped in after a job in the village and was glad I did. The food was great, the staff were lovely, and the atmosphere was brilliant. Prices were very reasonable too. Highly recommend.
