Inside, it’s fine, though the dark, slightly creepy exterior is a bit off-putting. It’s a great option for a cheap stay in Newcastle, with large rooms and comfortable beds. The windows are a little thin, so it can be noisy at night. Light sleepers might want earplugs. Breakfast was tasty and fresh, served in a clean, modern room. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I couldn’t ask for more from them.

We were nervous after reading the reviews, but the hotel turned out to be really nice and the location was spot on. It’s close to the metro and various pubs and clubs. We stayed overnight for a Hen Night and felt we got our money’s worth: the rooms were tidy, and they managed to put two of our four rooms next to each other. They also supported our request for a later checkout. Reception was open 24 hours, and the staff helped us with the keys during the night. Definitely worth considering if you want a well-priced hotel near the nightlife.

The staff were super friendly, made us feel welcome and gave great directions. I’d recommend the place on their personalities alone. The dining area looked fantastic after the recent refurbishment, but although our rooms were in good condition, they didn’t look brand new. The hallways felt tired, and some walls needed repair. The Surtees is about a 10-minute walk from the station and sits right above a Brew Dog, which I thought was bloody brilliant because they serve some of my favourite craft brews. We used a daily deal voucher and got excellent value, but I wouldn’t say it was worth the prices on the website.

For the money, I was so impressed with what I got. This gaff makes no pretensions, and you get what you pay for: it’s shabby, neglected and tired, but it has everything you need for a cheap stopover. The room was dark but comfortable, with all the extras you’d expect from a top-notch range establishment, even if they were a bit dated. The shower was first class, better than some hotels I’ve paid good money for, and the bed was huge and comfy. Thank you, Surtees Hotel Newcastle.
