This was a disappointing room. The bunk bed squeaked badly and wasn't comfortable, and there was sand on the floor, bed frame and mattress when I arrived. The supplied fan had broken legs and wouldn't stand up, so I couldn't use it. The stairs up to the extra loft rooms were very steep and narrow. I'm an average UK shoe size, but half my foot hung over the step, so anyone with larger feet, accessibility needs or a bit too much to drink could struggle. There's no lift. The room door had a standard lock and seemed secure, but a piece of paper was taped roughly over the glass pane above the door and did little to block corridor light. Noise carried through the floors and walls, from the front door slamming to people walking upstairs or talking in the corridor. The shared shower room was in poor shape, with mould on the shower, window and blinds. The shared toilets worked, but the locks felt weak, and I could imagine the screws giving way if someone pulled the handle hard. I didn't see any sanitary bins. There was only a tiny bin in the room, without a lid, so used products would have to be carried there and left next to the bed, which didn't feel hygienic. There was very little toilet paper too, and a single roll wouldn't last long with even about 12 people, half the rooms, staying. Parking was reasonably priced and there were six spaces, though it was tight even for smaller cars. The town and beach were an easy walk.

The location was the main draw: an easy walk to town, beaches and plenty of amenities within five minutes, plus parking. It's easy to find from the main road into Newquay. The building was fine, with good outdoor seating and a modern, well-stocked dining and bar area. The owner was friendly and helpful, and seemed like a genuinely good guy. I booked fairly late, and the photos made the available room look like good value. We chose a simple twin room with a shower and sink, just what we needed to sleep and get going the next day. I'd happily stay again.

We were a group of nine on a stag weekend, booked into three rooms at this low-budget stopover, but were handed only two keys on arrival. One room slept five and the other four. Both had a double bed and bunk beds, and the five-person room also had a single in the bay window. Each had an ensuite shower and toilet. It was basic, but worked okay. We only got two towels for five people, no toiletries and two cups for tea or coffee. The bar was good, and they served a full English whether you asked for one or not.

The family were friendly, but I wouldn't consider this suitable for a family stay. The beds were uncomfortable, with old, lumpy mattresses that dipped, and the duvets smelled unpleasant. Our room wasn't cleaned during our stay, and even the bin was left full. Hot water wasn't always available, so I had to ask the landlord for it. Smoke from people allowed to smoke inside the bar area drifted into our room. The fire alarm also went off repeatedly every day and during the night, waking my five-year-old daughter. Breakfast was another problem. The glasses smelled like wet dog, and although we'd paid for breakfast, no food was served to us on Saturday, our last day. We waited and rang the bell, but nobody came out.

I've stayed here several times, and it's always been clean. Raj is good fun and his family are lovely. People reviewing somewhere they've never stayed, just because they saw it on a TV programme, need to get a life. The only reason I don't stay now is that I choose places with a swimming pool.
