The vegetarian pie was the letdown. Mine had butternut squash, spinach, pumpkin seeds and a few other vegetables, but mostly tasted of dry crumbs, pastry and oil. There was little seasoning or vegetable flavour, and hardly any protein beyond a few seeds. It needed gravy because it was so dry, but then the gravy took over the dish. The vegetarian gravy was surprisingly hearty and good, assuming it really was vegetarian. It’s frustrating that vegetarian food can still amount to pastry, breadcrumbs and a few vegetables instead of a balanced meal with flavour and protein. I suspect someone who ate vegetarian food regularly might have reconsidered this pie. There were good parts to our family birthday meal. The beef was described as delicious, tender and flaky, and the roast potatoes, vegetables, red cabbage and gravy were all good. The greens were cooked nicely, the cabbage had a pleasant vinegary tang, and the potatoes were soft and well done. It seems a decent spot for traditional pub and carvery food, especially for meat eaters, but the vegetarian main needs serious work. The rest of the meal showed the kitchen could do better. Our draught lemonade tasted unpleasantly chemical, though they replaced it without a fuss. Dessert was a mixed bag: one order was wrong at first but corrected, the sticky toffee pudding was fine, and the crumble was reportedly too sweet with too little topping. Paying was a bit awkward too, since we had to go to the bar instead of paying separately at the table.

The service was fantastic as usual. We were seated quickly, looked after well, and the food came out fast. The little pie was the best part of the plate, fresh, tasty and lovely. The lamb, though, was a “Rump of lamb” that seemed short on rump, maybe the chef was hungry 😆 I asked for medium rare and got medium well, with no seasoning on anything. Honestly, that was pretty disappointing. I tend to avoid the roasts now. When I order pork, it’s missing crackling and stuffing, and the beef is definitely not sirloin, it’s a topside joint. Someone might ask why I didn’t say anything at the time, but it was very busy, everyone looked occupied, and I was hungry. It’s not the end of the world.

Tracey was lovely with our party of 10 at breakfast for my 50th. She was friendly, the service was good, and she took a group photo and brought out my cake. Thank you!

The Gamston Lock is such a great dog-friendly pub. There’s plenty of room indoors and outside, and the staff always make a fuss of our pup. The food is tasty, freshly cooked, and served in good portions. We’ve never been disappointed, and the atmosphere and service are great. Terry the General manager is always friendly, too. Our dog gives it five paws!

Tracey and Bella were especially helpful and paid attention to the details. We had a wonderful night, the food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. We’ll definitely come back.
