The smoked trout starter with seasonal asparagus was delicious, and my steak was cooked perfectly. Oddly, the mushroom and green peppercorn sauce was the star of the plate. Everything was beautifully presented, and the staff were friendly and helpful. A cracking meal, well worth the drive. There’s a varied menu that changes, with traditional game and smoked dishes alongside familiar options like fish and chips and steak. Rabbit, squirrel and pigeon were on offer when I visited. It’s been a while since a restaurant impressed me so much with its range and the quality of its food.

The building is big and old, with a lovely atmosphere, though I wished I’d brought a jumper because the windows made it draughty. It’s a shame we got here a bit late, as it seems like a great place. We’d specifically come on word of mouth for the game selection. A few options weren’t available, which made sense given the owners are moving. The partridge was lovely, and even with a hiccup, the venison croquette was lovely too.

We shared the meat platter to start, and it was delicious. For mains, we had stone bass and wrapped pheasant, both cooked just right. The food and service were excellent, with staff paying close attention and making sure we had what we needed. I’d definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone after a great meal.

The ribeye was to die for, and we’re already making plans to go back. As locals, we feel lucky to have such a great place nearby. A fantastic evening in a great venue!

My wife and I had lunch here and were really impressed by the food. It was tasty and good value, and the location is nice too. I’ve already recommended it to friends and will definitely be back.
