The Gate Inn

We loved the Halloween decorations and table football, and it was great to see vegan food on offer. The landlord was really helpful and friendly, and it's a lovely place. This was our first visit, during the scarecrow event in October 2023. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too.

We stopped for food while doing the Halloween trail. The atmosphere was lovely, and everyone was very welcoming.

The outside looks good, but inside felt very tired and the floors weren't clean. I went for the first time midweek. The cheese and onion plated pie tasted okay, with skin-on fries and beans, but there was only a spoonful of beans in a small pot. My wife had the burger, which had an okay patty and was meaty, with skinny fries, a pot of slaw, and a side salad. The salad looked tired, and the slaw felt too risky to eat. Food prices are a little high, and would be fine if the portions and quality matched. They seem to be making margins. I'd advise using plain white plates, serving good portions, and avoiding food that's tired or past it. I wouldn't return as it is. For midweek lunch, Old Bell does its classics for a third less.

Was it closed down? It was meant to be open on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't open today. Try Hare and Hounds in Uppermill instead, it's open and a 4 quid Uber ride away.
