Scotlands Spa Hotel

The £100 parking charge for using the hotel’s own private car park is why we won’t return. Our appeal was rejected. I accept that I missed the terms on a sign outside, but reception didn’t mention the special parking rules or permits when we arrived, which felt far from customer friendly. The charge may technically be correct, but it’s hard not to wonder whether the hotel makes more from “illegal parking” penalties than from running the spa. If that’s the business model, enjoy the quick buck. I don’t recommend this place. We visited for a spa day in December. The facilities were as advertised, clean and pleasant, and the afternoon tea was fine, though nothing memorable.

The buffet breakfast had plenty of choice, with both continental and cooked options, and you won’t leave hungry. Our room had what we needed for a short stay: a comfy bed, cosy bedding, a good shower, plus bathrobes and slippers. It stayed warm inside despite the freezing weather outside. We were there for our first anniversary, and the staff had left prosecco and a card in the room, a thoughtful touch. There’s no dinner option, but you get a 10% voucher for the local sister hotel if you want to eat there. The indoor pool is a nice place to unwind after a long drive. The jacuzzi wasn’t working during our visit, so I can’t say what it’s like.

I knew nothing about the hotel or its reviews when I arrived with a gifted voucher, so the oddly low Google rating didn’t put me off. It’s a lovely choice for a short stay, with fresh refurbishment throughout and a bright reception and bar. We had a cosy double room with modern decor, a large refurbished bathroom with bright tiling, a smart TV and a Nespresso machine. I slept comfortably and quietly. The hotel is well placed in Pitlochry, a gorgeous little town. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and we really enjoyed the visit. We’ll return.

This comes down to what you pay. At a three-star price it’s a reasonable deal; if you’re paying four- or five-star rates, probably less so. The place is a period building, not the Ritz, and a moaner will find things to complain about. The location is excellent and breakfast was decent. Staff we met were really good. Parking is limited, and you’ll get a £100 fine if you don’t enter your registration at reception. There are plenty of warning signs in the car park. We were in the bank building. The room and WC were okay for a three-star stay, but it was freezing at first. With single glazing and high ceilings, it took a while to warm up. The bathroom felt like Siberia despite the towel radiator running all day. The spa was okay, more like an older local authority pool than a top-end spa. The jacuzzi was average, while the steam room and gym were decent. After reading some reviews once we’d booked, I expected worse.
