I stayed for three weeks in August this year, and it was hell. The room was dirty, the furniture and rooms looked tired and worn compared with the photos online, and the wardrobe was unstable because its back was off. The bedsheets had hair and blood stains. The bathroom light switch cord broke. I tried to fix it, but it kept snapping, and I accidentally broke the cheap toilet seat while doing so. The fire alarm kept beeping and triggering my PTSD. I reported it several times, but nothing was done apart from removing the detector head. It only needed a 12v battery replacement, and I had no working detector for the rest of my stay. There was lots of banging and noise in the hotel and next door. When the manager returned from holiday, there had been no handover from amdy, and the rooms were never serviced. The maintenance man was approachable, which was the only positive, but maintenance was otherwise useless. There was no housekeeping, I didn’t feel safe, and staff were rude and aggressive. The fire safety was breached. I was disabled and going through a mental breakdown, which the hotel knew about. I’d just lost my uncle to cancer and wanted someone to talk to, but the manager wasn’t bothered. On my last day she banged violently on the door, shouting and screaming, then unlocked it and came into my room while I was naked and going to the toilet. She told me to be quiet or she’d call the police. I asked her to leave, and she threatened me with the police. I said to go ahead because I’d done nothing wrong. The police came and were nice. After that, I was forced to sleep rough on the street for three months, and I’m still homeless. There was a broken window at the front of the hotel, poorly boarded up, and broken glass by the front door. When I appealed to the council, I asked about the CCTV. She lied and said she hadn’t entered my accommodation, made me out to be in the wrong, and said the CCTV didn’t work. I disagree. I’ve worked in hospitality as a maintenance manager for large estates and hotels, and I’ve never stayed in such a hellhole. Making me homeless while I was in crisis is disgusting. Stay far away and boycott this inhumane excuse for a hotel!

The bed was comfortable, the shower was great, and I was given a warm welcome. The road outside can make it noisy, and parking isn’t always easy. There was a lovely TV in the roo, but the signal was rubbish and channels kept disappearing. It also needs information about fire exits, and a booklet listing local amenities would be useful.

My son had a wonderful host in Ms. Florentina, who was attentive, kind, patient, and generous while he was stranded in the UK during the Covid-19 lockdown. He stayed almost 3 1/2 months at a greatly reduced rate, which we deeply appreciated. He was given a larger room at check-in, a small refrigerator, and use of the laundry room for the duration of the lockdown. Because of the pandemic, my son felt it was best to clean his room and change his own sheets. Ms. Florentina understood, let him use the vacuum and cleaning supplies, and gave him fresh sheets every week. The clean rooms and perfect location, near shops and endless running tracks, were a great relief to him. We’re so grateful to the Owner of Carhampton and Ms. Florentina for taking such good care of our son. It gave us peace of mind. We wish the Carhampton guest house all the best. If we get to visit Plymouth ourselves, we’ll definitely stay there and hope to experience that same warmth and welcome.

I didn’t end up staying because my travel date changed, but based on other travellers’ comments, I’m sure it would have been a pleasant stay. They also kindly waived the cancellation fee, even though the free cancellation deadline had passed. I’m very pleased with the customer service.

Florentina, the manager, was a great host and couldn’t do enough for me. The large ensuite room was spotless, with a TV, tea and coffee, fresh towels, toiletries and some snacks. The place is clean, worth every penny, and the customer service was superb. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the train station or city centre, or an average £6 taxi ride. There aren’t many shops close by, so remember to pick up what you need in town before returning. It’s an ideal base for travelling into Cornwall too. A day return to Truro cost £11.10. I’d highly recommend it.
