Royal Sportsman Hotel

We went for dinner on a Sunday night in January. We checked that we could order food and were told yes, but nobody mentioned the kitchen would close in ten minutes. The waitress was polite and efficient. My partner had fish and I chose the scampi. It came quickly, but later I was violently ill with food poisoning and spent half the night up. Since the only thing I ate or drank that evening was at the Sportsman, I have to assume it was the scampi. Next time I think I’ll stick to the local fish and chip shop.

Our trip ended too soon, and we’re already looking forward to coming back. The rooms were simply furnished but had everything we needed, and the staff were super friendly. We really enjoyed the restaurant, both for breakfast and our evening meals. A super hotel, and very well done.

Room 7 in the courtyard had such a strong wet dog smell that it was still there the next morning. We left the door and window open, but it made no difference, and I’ve reported how unpleasant it was. The double bed was comfortable, though the left side sloped enough to make me feel I might fall out. The hotel itself was great, with friendly staff and a lovely bar and restaurant. Breakfast was good too.

After my son checked out, housekeeping noticed he’d left a calculator and a book behind. They emailed me promptly and even arranged a courier to send the items back. I’m truly grateful for the care and thoughtfulness. He stayed six nights while doing a placement with Ffestiniog Railways, and said he was looked after wonderfully. The welcome was warm and the meals delicious. Their attentive service left a lasting impression on both of us.
