The location was really convenient for our visit to highclere castle, easy to reach while still feeling tucked away. We're now thinking of coming back just to enjoy the carpenters arms again. The staff were amazing, always kind, friendly and happy to chat. The food was very good too. Breakfast is included, and my wife said the scrambled eggs were the best she'd ever had. Dinner was pretty good, with a generous main and spot-on flavours. Dessert was the highlight, out of this world. I would've had another if I hadn't been completely stuffed. Our room was cute, functional and tastefully decorated, with comfy, basic beds and a generous supply of tea and coffee. It's very peaceful with almost no noise around. These are old rooms in an old cottage, so there are a few drawbacks: steep stairs with low ceilings, and plumbing that takes a while to get going in rooms that wouldn't originally have had water. Those things are worth knowing, but the many nice details make up for them. We really can't recommend it enough.

We had a really enjoyable evening meal and breakfast in the restaurant. The food was cooked to order and served on a lovely hot plate. The friendly staff welcomed our little dog warmly and couldn't have been more accommodating. Great real ale at a great price, too. Our room had everything we needed, including tea and coffee, bottled water, soap and shampoo. It was clean, quiet and cosy, with lovely white linen and towels and a very comfortable bed for a good night's sleep. The location just off the A34 is handy. We'd recommend staying and would definitely return. The only small niggle was an occasional noise in the bathroom when using the toilet. Thanks to all the staff we met, and the ones we didn't, for making the stay so enjoyable.

Jack and Joshua both deserve a mention. Jack, the supervisor, waited to welcome us and show us to our room after our Ouistreham/Portsmouth ferry arrived late due to bad weather. Joshua looked after us at breakfast the next morning. Both were a credit to the Carpenters. Our room was in an adjacent cottage and was comfortable and really well equipped. Breakfast is served in the restaurant, with options like toasted French brioche with bacon and maple syrup, pancakes with fruit compote and crème fraîche, as well as full English breakfast. It's dog friendly, easy to reach from the A34 and well placed for longer stays. Brilliant.

The garden is attractive, and the location is handy for a visit to the NT property Durham Park. Be careful when pulling back onto the main road, as it can be very busy. The restaurant wasn't busy when we went, but the service was very poor. Food was reasonable, though not brilliant.

We spent a relaxed, cosy Sunday afternoon by the fire playing games, and the food was absolutely delicious. The pub is beautifully decorated inside, balancing the feel of a local pub with somewhere a bit fancy to eat. The staff were friendly and welcoming, with just the right amount of attention. Thank you to the whole team for making our afternoon!
