The chocolate naughty cake was a treat, and we had just enough room for pudding after the roast. We'll definitely come back, though I wish we'd tried it sooner. Black Bull is my favourite place to eat in the village and does the best roast too. We'd loved their carvery, which is the best around, so were a bit unsure about trying the plated roast after their winter change. I'm not usually keen on plated roasts when eating out, but this one was top notch. The meat came with generous helpings of veg, Yorkshire pud, mash and roast potatoes. You could ask for more vegetables, though what was served was plenty. There was gravy on the plate and a good sized jug alongside it, which was a winner for me. In early January the meat choices were pheasant, turkey and beef. I was glad to see pheasant on the menu and will try it if it's available next time.

The building itself is lovely and the place felt cosy, but the interior has some cheap looking touches. The chairs reminded me of office furniture. There are things that could be improved, especially the food. I think the dishes should be reconsidered to see if they meet restaurant quality. I was there to eat, so I can't comment on the rooms. The loaded nachos were nothing special, just chips with cheese and sauce. I'd expect guacamole and jalapeño on something called loaded nachos. My Chicken Parma didn't taste good, and based on the photos and earlier reviews it seemed quite overdone. I only checked those reviews afterward, so couldn't point it out to the staff. We also had the steak and ale pie. It tasted nice, but was tiny, with the plate padded out by mash and vegetables. The gravy was good.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and it felt welcoming inside, with open fires. It's dog friendly too. When we asked for help with my wife's Alzeimers, they were happy to assist. The food looked good, and it's definitely worth a try if you're in the area.

The cottage pie in the pub downstairs was the best meal of our Inn’s Way hike. The landlord lit the fireplace, which made the place really cosy. Breakfast was hearty, though the scrambled eggs seemed like some kind of packaged egg product. Get the fried eggs instead and it's a perfect stay. We spent one night there and got the last room, up in the attic with a shared bathroom. The ceiling was low, but the room was quiet and full of character. The bathroom had hot water and good pressure.

Lovely food and beer in a great bar with open fires. The rooms are spotless and very comfortable, thanks to the hardworking staff, and tea and coffee are there whenever you need them. This place is a real jewel in the dales. I'll definitely be back soon 👌
