We ended up driving home without staying, which was a costly and inconvenient end to our weekend in Tunbridge Wells for a wedding. We’d been drawn to the look of the Oast House, and Olga seemed friendly when we arrived. Her pets even greeted us in the driveway. That changed when we got into the room. It smelled so strongly of cat urine that we could taste it, and opening the windows didn’t help. We told Olga at check-in. She offered air freshener, then suggested one of her cats might have urinated on the linen while she was ironing. We hoped she’d clean the room and change the bedding while we were at dinner, but nothing had improved when we came back. The sheets were dirty too, with what looked like a cat urine stain. We left politely and explained why we were disappointed. We contacted booking.com, but after several rejected requests they said we’d need to resolve it with Olga. She wouldn’t refund us despite our not staying, and later called us “libellous” for describing the smell. We’d have preferred to settle this privately, but she refused to return any money. Look at the pictures and decide for yourself.

I left in a worse position than when I arrived, with stolen belongings and my mental health suffering. I’d been homeless and struggling financially when I rented a room at the Oast house for several months. While I was away, the owner stole things from my room, including jewellery, clothes, documents, hair looms and appliances. I lost about £400 worth of belongings in total. The whole house smelled of cat urine, and the owner kept raising the rent and threatening eviction. I’d urge people to stay away from this property.

A film in a character-filled, beautiful setting, with a cosy home cinema room and a warm welcome from local people. It was a unique experience, and I’ll definitely return next time I’m in the area.

Loved the room, the hosts and the dog. Great place, I’ll be back.

Such a warm welcome, and the room was really comfortable. Slept brilliantly. I’ll be back!
