We came back to Airy Hill because we liked being so close to Whitby, with bus stops for Robin Hoods Bay nearby and lovely views across the river to the Abbey. The last time, the caretaker was helpful and kept the facilities reasonably clean. This visit was a letdown. There was hot water and soap at the sinks, but they hadn't been cleaned, and the toilets were dirty, with empty toilet rolls and a half-full bin when we arrived. The shower looked pretty dubious too. On our second day, after we got back in the afternoon and saw that no cleaning had happened, I reported it. Mark told me he'd emptied the bins and replaced the rolls, but the facilities still hadn't been cleaned. We stayed two days and saw no cleaning at all. That's a basic expectation when you pay for toilets and showers, so it was very disappointing.
The location is really good, but our motorhome pitch was very small, with no room for an awning. We had water and electric, though there was nowhere to wash pots and I couldn't find a place to dispose of grey waste.
Mark, who handled our booking and was around the site, was really helpful. We had a clean, tidy stay in our campervan, and the caravan site made it easy to get into Whitby. We'll come back 👍
The location was the main reason we enjoyed our stay. The pitches were a decent size, but with one right beside the road through the site, putting out a canopy might be difficult. We found the price steep for what was provided and probably wouldn't return. Arriving was confusing. There's no reception, and the emails gave little information, so I had to phone Mark for instructions. He was cheerful and very helpful. The dishwashing spot had a sink I wouldn't want to use, and no draining board, so it wasn't clear how you were meant to wash dishes there. The toilets were clean, though the shower seemed a bit questionable. Someone was smoking in the toilets, which stank, but that's not something the site can be blamed for. Leaving was a headache because there were no signs to show the way out. I wasn't sure whether to reverse and risk hitting the motorhome on the toilet block's overhanging roof, or drive around. I wish I'd reversed. Our vehicle is 7.6m, and we only just squeezed round after moving pots, chairs, traffic cones and tables belonging to other caravans.
The showers and toilets could do with a small upgrade, and that would have made it five stars for us. We had a good weekend at Airy Hill caravan park, though. The owner had told us it was a small site when we booked, so its size wasn't an issue. Whitby is just 10 minutes away, and the walking and cycle track towards Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough is close by. Harry showed us to our pitch and was very helpful with local directions and things to see. We'd stay again if we visit Whitby.
