We sat beside the roaring wood fire on a damp, grey afternoon, which was just perfect. A lovely woman welcomed us, took our order and brought the meal over. It was freshly made, and the chicken skewers were a generous serving. I had the duck and orange pâté as a starter for my main, and it was absolutely delicious. It was very quiet, though we were there between lunch and dinner. I'd happily recommend it.

I popped in for a quick beer while wandering the gorgeous streets of Sandwich and was greeted by truly lovely staff. It's a welcoming place with a wide choice of drinks, and you can soak up the historic atmosphere. They also have a hotel, so I'll definitely be back, probably to stay!

The garden is beautiful, and the food and service were absolutely amazing. I'd highly recommend it for a Sunday roast. I asked for gravy on the side, but it comes with gravy, and it's delicious. The vegetables are served separately.

We come for lunch fairly often and have never been disappointed. Service is always great, and the food arrives piping hot and tasty. This time we brought our friend The Captain and, naturally, had beers and wine. He chose tomato soup and the chicken, prawn and avocado salad with new potatoes from the specials board, and said it was really tasty. I started with filo prawns and garlic mayo, then had fish and chips. I'd been craving them for ages and had tried a few elsewhere without finding the right ones. These were perfect, with batter that wasn't too greasy, crisp or soggy. My husband had smoked salmon to start, then steak and kidney pudding with roasties and veg. We both really enjoyed our meals too. We were too full for pudding, though the list sounded lovely. We were treated, so I can't say exactly what it cost. Starters were around £7 each and mains somewhere between £15 and £20. Well worth it.

With its roots going back to around 1595, this has the feel of a classic British pub. The atmosphere is friendly and the setting comfortable. There was plenty of beer on tap, including hand-pulled options, and the food was great. A must if you're in Sandwich!
