The New Inn

There is wheelchair access round the back, and it’s a lovely-looking place, but the pub feels a bit tired and could do with updating. The staff were easy enough to approach, though not especially welcoming. There’s no parking available, and the place just seems to be missing something. It needs a rethink.

The food, breakfast and ales were all very good, and room 5 was comfortable and pleasant. The bathroom, though, was probably the dirtiest I’ve seen in a while. Dust and grime had gathered in the corners, and it really needed a thorough clean. I’d still recommend it.

The food was fantastic, especially the chicken. I’d get two pieces. I haven’t stayed in the rooms, just came in to eat, but it was some of the best pub or hotel food I’ve had in ages. There was a wait, though they explained that before I ordered, so I was fine with it. The two women behind the bar were polite and handled the busy spell calmly, with good people skills.

Next time we visit Sandwich, we’ll eat somewhere else. It’s a shame, because the New Inn used to serve really tasty food. My husband and I chose chicken dishes as we usually do, and I specifically asked for thin fries because I don’t like thick chips. The pub wasn’t very busy, yet our food took 45 minutes. My breaded chicken strips, thigh and drumsticks were overcooked, and the thin fries I’d asked for weren’t there. At almost £16, it was unpalatable. Nobody checked whether the meal was all right while we were at the table, unlike at Weatherspoons. Sandwich itself is charming, with lots of places to eat and drink. We had a warm, clear day out there, and the pub is nice, but I’d choose another place for a meal.
