The room was in the K building and looked nothing like the pictures. We only ended up here because the city was overwhelmed by a concert and proper accommodation had run out. It felt inhumane, and I feel awful for any student who has to live like this. The heating ran on a timer for at most two hours at a time. We came back from the concert to an icy room, and it took two hours to warm up. Until then I had to sleep under my coat because the blankets were so thin. I also had to get up twice during the night to start another heating cycle. The room stank of stale cigarettes. The bathroom looked like something out of Chernobyl. It was as clean as decades of wear would allow, but the tiles were cracked and there was mildew everywhere. Some towels smelled, and the sheets were completely worn out. I’m sure we paid more because demand was high, £130, but I still expected them either not to rent rooms in that condition or at least to warn us. Maybe they dug out retired towels and bedding because of the demand. It’s sad that this is the best they can offer. At that price, they could have bought new sheets and towels, or just told us to bring our own. I’m sorry for anyone, mostly students I assume, who has to live like this. Life does get better after school, though this one-off trip to Sheffield for a concert was a rough exception.

The rooms were spacious, and the staff were really helpful. I especially liked the common room and the new gym.

I’ve had a great experience with the Sheffield 3 team. Kieran, Ray, and Munesh are always polite and genuinely helpful, and their email replies come quickly with all the details included. A special thank you to Kieran for kindly helping us move our belongings. ^^

Mohamed Hoonaishi and Jason have been especially kind and supportive. As my tenancy was coming to an end, they helped me sort everything out, from small adjustments to making the move-out process easier. They really do try to make things simpler for students, and I’m grateful. If you need something specific or want an adjustment, go to Mohamed Hoonaishi or Jason. They’re great and will do their best to help. I’ve had a really good experience at Student Roost Sheffield 3. The accommodation is comfortable and well kept, with spacious, modern rooms that are fully furnished. There’s a good study desk, a comfy chair, a wardrobe and plenty of storage. Bills include electricity, heating, water, Wi-Fi and contents insurance, so there aren’t extra costs to worry about. The location is handy, close to Kelham Island, Tesco, restaurants and public transport. Shalesmoor tram stop is just around the corner, and it’s easy to walk or take a quick tram to the city centre or university. There are common rooms and quiet study spaces, plus on-site laundry, 24-hour security and a friendly reception team. I’d recommend Sheffield 3 to students looking for somewhere comfortable, friendly and well located. It’s good value and one of the better student accommodation options in Sheffield.

The shared spaces were a mess too. Rubbish was tossed across the games room floor, fridges had rubbish shoved between them, and antisocial behaviour went unaddressed. People outside my flat would stare at you in a judgemental way, so nowhere felt welcoming. And it wasn’t always just three flatmates. Some people brought their husbands, who didn’t merely visit but actually lived there. I wouldn’t have minded that by itself, except they were the ones making most of the mess. My first year at university here was the worst accommodation experience I’ve had. On arrival, the room was disgusting: black hair all over the floor and shower, even caught beneath the desk chair wheels, blood on the mattress, and dust covering every surface. The kitchen was full of flies and didn’t look clean. I went down to tell the staff, who were lovely and sent a cleaner up and apologised, but the problems continued. I was very sick through the year and suspected mould might be involved. I emailed the office about it, since it had been there before I arrived, but nothing was done. The flatmates left chopped vegetables on the floor and let the bin leak. It wasn’t even my bin, so I ended up keeping one in my room. They didn’t clean up, and it made me cry a few times. My room was right by the kitchen, and I often smelled cigarette smoke. The next day I’d find cigarette butts on the floor and burns on the wall. When I cleaned, I found around 30 butts shoved under the sofa, with ash everywhere. I kept the office updated, but all they did was send a few emails. I was told that if I kept complaining, everyone might be charged because they “couldn’t be sure who was doing it.” I had caught the person, but that response made me feel like I was being told to shut up or risk being charged too. The boiler was also known to break in winter.
