Deer House

The little bothy is attached to the end of the main place, so there’s a slight loss of privacy, though it’s minor. The big drawback is the fridge freezer, which is barely larger than a hotel room one. That’s a real snag somewhere this remote. Also, there’s no blind or curtain on the main living area window and door, so it gets dark at night and there’s no way to avoid being on show if you’re not dressed.

My wife and I found the Salmon Bothy, attached to the Deer House, clean and very pleasant, with a full kitchenette. The owner was friendly and quick to respond to messages. We had no cell service and the internet was slow, but we’d been told to expect that beforehand. We’d happily stay again if we return to the area.

As a photographer, I loved the beautiful scenery and the chance to spot some stunning wildlife, if you have the patience. Getting there means driving well off the beaten track, especially if you’re not local, but the distance from civilisation is exactly what I like. It’s peaceful, the landscapes are stunning, and both of my stays here have been a pleasure.

Such a lovely place, and the hosts are absolutely fantastic.
